BLUFFTON, S.C. (WSAV) – In a commendable move to support community members facing financial challenges, Bluffton Self Help has earmarked $50,000 for college scholarships. This initiative is set to make a significant impact on the lives of 25 students, aiding with the costs of books, supplies, and tuition.

“When we think about our financial hardship program, we know that college and the cost of tuition can be a burden and a hardship,” said Courtney Hampson, CEO of Bluffton Self Help. “This scholarship fund is a vital step in alleviating some of that financial strain.”

The funds are designated for use at two-year or four-year institutions, technical colleges, or certificate programs. Hampson highlighted the broad scope of the initiative, aiming to support recent high school graduates, nontraditional students, and adult learners considering a return to education.

“Whether it’s recent high school grads unsure about their next steps due to financial burdens or adult learners contemplating a return to school, this scholarship program is here to assist,” Hampson stated.

In a community where 60% of residents are not earning a livable wage, educational expenses can be a substantial obstacle. By covering some of these costs, Bluffton Self Help enables students and their families to redirect funds towards other essential needs, thereby reducing the overall financial burden.

Kennedy Smalls, a recent University of South Carolina graduate and volunteer at Bluffton Self Help, attested to the organization’s extensive support. “They’re always looking to help people,” said Smalls. “From JD courses to job placement assistance and resume building, Bluffton Self Help is there for almost everything.”

Bluffton Self Help’s scholarship program is not just about alleviating immediate financial stress but also about fostering long-term success. “We have some really hard conversations; folks are hungry and struggling,” said Hampson. “But on the education side, that’s where we see success and get to celebrate it. Helping someone achieve their higher education goals is something we can proudly celebrate.”
